Lee Crandall named department chairman of public health sciences
CLEMSON – Clemson University’s department of public health sciences has named professor Lee Crandall chairman.
Crandall is a health-services researcher, social epidemiologist and medical sociologist. He was trained at Purdue University’s Health Services Research and Training Program as a United States Public Health Service Fellow. He has served on the faculty at the University of Florida where he served as director of research of the College of Medicine; the University of Illinois as professor and head of the department for Urbana-Champaign; and the University of Miami as the associate chairman for admissions in the department of epidemiology and public health for the School of Medicine.
Crandall’s research has focused on a wide variety of topics ranging from health and disability to epidemiology and substance-abuse prevention. His current research addresses the epidemiology of adolescent illicit drug use and drinking and shines a light on the effectiveness of prevention and treatment programs for at-risk populations.
Crandall also was involved in several projects, including a partnership with Florida’s Department of Children and Families to evaluate substance-abuse programs all over the state. He also serves as a peer reviewer for the National Institutes of Health and is a member of the Florida Substance Abuse Prevention Advisory Council.
Crandall is interested in teaching survey design, research methods, ethical issues in public health, substance-abuse epidemiology and the development of training related to the interfaces of bioethics.
