First Friday Nature Walk

May 2 - Meet David Bradshaw, naturalist and retired Clemson University horticulture professor, at the flag pole in the front parking area near the Cadet Life Garden and the Red Caboose. This informative walk encompasses all forms of nature: birds, trees, signs of wildlife and more. Wear comfortable shoes; walks last one to two hours. Free.

Starts at 7 a.m.

Practical Botany for Gardeners


May 6 - Learn more about the world of plants in this class designed for gardeners and naturalists. How do flowers produce fruits? How are plants identified? How do you tell when seeds are mature? Why does pinching and deadheading prolong flowering? Why do some plants wilt sooner than others? Explore the intricacies of plants with education director Lisa Wagner.

Hours: 9 a.m. to noon

Fee: $25 ($20 for garden and museum members and volunteers)

Making More Plants: Propagation Techniques for Gardeners

May 8 - Interested in growing plants from cuttings, starting plants from seed and learning about the basics of plant division? Join horticulturist and S.C. Botanical Garden Nursery Manager Ryan Merck for a demonstration-based workshop focused on plant propagation. Merck is responsible for the garden's bi-annual plant sale as well as ongoing propagation and plant production for garden landscapes.

Hours: 9  to 11 a.m.

Fee: $12 ($10 for garden and museum members and volunteers)

South India's Natural Diversity

May 13 - The coasts of Goa and Kerala, the inland backwaters, the diversity of the Western Ghats, and the landscapes surrounding the southern hill stations were the focus of a recent trip to South India. Director of Education Lisa Wagner and her husband Tim Spira are keen natural history travelers whose interests in the natural world and other cultures have encouraged them to explore diverse places throughout the world.

Hours: Noon to 1 p.m.

Fee: Free

Museum Day/Open House

May 17 - Bring the family for an afternoon of natural discovery. Kids will get to enjoy crafts and digging for fossils and minerals, as well as the unique exhibits on display in the museum. Bring along your favorite rocks or fossils for identification.

Hours: 1 - 4 p.m.

Location: Campbell Geology Museum

Geology Museum

May 17 - Visit the Campbell Geology Museum on the third weekend of the month and get free admission. Enjoy exhibits of fossils, minerals, rocks and gems, including a fluorescent mineral.

Hours: 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Wednesday-Saturday and 1-5 p.m. Sunday

Artist Gallery: Deana Baker, featured artist for April-June

Deana Chavis Baker was born in Newberry and grew up in Bennettsville. At an early age she painted alongside her mother and was introduced to oil painting, drawing, sculpture and set design. She inherited a love for nature and the beauty of the South Carolina landscape.

The garden and Geology Museum are located on the Clemson University campus at the intersection of U.S. 76 and Perimeter Road. The garden encompasses 295 acres of gardens, streams and woodlands, and is open year-round from sunrise to sunset, free of charge. Support the garden or Geology Museum and become a member. Contact C.
