Clemson University Foundation adds new board members, elects officers
CLEMSON — Clemson University Foundation Board of Directors has added five new members and announced a new chairman and vice chairwoman.
“We are pleased to welcome this new group of directors for a four-year term to the foundation board,” said Harrison F. Trammell, president and CEO of the foundation. “We are excited about the individual skills and passion for Clemson that they have to offer along with bringing fresh ideas and new perspectives.”
The new directors are Ernest “Ernie” M. Briel of Rosman, N.C.; Lori Anne Carr of Ridge Spring; J. Richard “Dick” Cottingham of Seneca; Pickens “Pick” M. Lindsay of Atlanta and Bartow “Bo” S. Shaw of Sumter.
Briel retired as CEO/chairman of the architecture and engineering firm he co-founded in 1964, BRPH Companies/Architects & Engineering Inc. He graduated from Clemson in 1956 with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering and received an MBA from the Florida Institute of Technology in 1983. Currently, Briel spends his time consulting and tending a small herd of cattle. He is married to Patricia M. Howard Briel, and they have four sons and six grandchildren.
Carr serves as vice president of Titan Farms, South Carolina’s largest peach operation—farming more than 3,250 acres of peaches and vegetables. She graduated from Clemson in 1990 with a bachelor's degree in elementary education and in 1992 with a master’s degree in education administration. She is married to Chalmers R. Carr III, and they have two children, Chalmers and Carly Anne.
As a captain in the Navy Civil Engineer Corps, Cottingham served two tours in Vietnam with the Navy Seabees and served in numerous assignments in the United States and overseas. He graduated from Clemson with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering in 1966. He received a master's degree in civil engineering from Georgia Tech in 1973. Twice he was appointed by the governor as a member of the North Carolina Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors. He also is past president of the National Council of Engineering Examiners. Currently, Cottingham serves as president of Cottingham & Associates engineering firm and Lake Keowee Properties. He also serves as a construction arbitrator with the American Arbitrators Association. He is married to Nancy, and they have two children, Andy and Carrie.
Lindsay is the president and owner of Calhoun Management Corporation, a Wendy’s franchisee with 13 stores in north Georgia and western North Carolina. He also is president of the Atlanta and Chattanooga Wendy’s advertising co-op. He received a bachelor's degree in history in 1974 and an MBA and law degree from the University of South Carolina in 1977. Lindsay is married to Elizabeth “Libby” Haygood, and they have two children, Pickens Jr. and Elizabeth.
Shaw is a 1963 graduate of Clemson with a bachelor's degree in forestry. He received a Master of Forestry degree from Duke University in 1964. Shaw is chairman and founder of American Forestry Management Inc., a forestry consulting company, which is currently the largest private forest management organization in the United States. He has served two terms on the foundation board. He is married to Victoria Livingston Shaw, and they have four children.
The new chairman of the foundation board is James “Jimmy” A. Addison of Atlanta and the new vice chairwoman is Jane S. Sosebee of Clemson.
Addison is a long-standing member of the board. He graduated from Clemson in 1968 with a bachelor's degree in economics and received his law degree from the University of Virginia in 1971. He is a partner in the law firm of Troutman Sanders in Atlanta.
Sosebee is the director of external affairs for AT&T in Greenville, where she has worked for more than 25 years. She is a 1978 Clemson graduate with a bachelor's degree in English. Sosebee is a member of the chambers of commerce in Greenville and Anderson and the Greenville Area Development Corporation. She is married to Greg, and they have two children.
The Clemson University Foundation is an independent, not-for-profit 501(c)(3) entity organized solely to promote the welfare and future development of Clemson University. It was chartered in 1933 to support the university’s educational and scientific goals. It is the responsibility of the board of directors to manage and disburse assets prudently within a policy that encourages the enhancement of the resources of the foundation.
