South Carolina Botanical Garden announces August events

Art gallery feature: Quilts by Suzanne Edwards de Vargas
On display July through September, the gallery of the Fran Hansen Discovery Center showcases the work of Suzanne Edwards de Vargas. A South Carolina native, de Vargas draws from her travels to South America and her environmental studies in the rain forest to create colorful, intricate quilts featuring native birds found in Bolivia’s Curichi Cuajo, or Heron Pool.

The work of Elizabeth Belser FullerOngoing
See the new additions to the collection of watercolors, acrylics and mixed-media works by native South Carolinian and friend of the garden Elizabeth Belser Fuller. The collection includes a set of paintings from the island of Dominica and quilt “Garden Escape” by Marilyn Wall and Diana Pickens that was commissioned by Fuller in 2005. A $2 suggested donation supports the gallery.

First Friday Nature WalkAug. 1
Meet at the Red Caboose for an informative walk with naturalist and Clemson University professor David Bradshaw. Wear comfortable shoes and appropriate dress. Walks generally last between one and two hours.

Garden YogaWednesdays
Anita Reina-Nunnelly leads Vinyasa Yoga classes that are open to everyone.

Planning a Fall Vegetable Garden- Aug. 21
South Carolina’s climate gives plenty of time to grow both cool- and warm-season vegetables and herbs and fall gardens often are very productive. Plan and plant now for a continuing fall harvest of specialty lettuces, greens, edible flowers and herbs. This class teaches how to select vegetables and herbs that do well in autumn, winter and beyond. Create a beautiful and productive “kitchen garden” by focusing on successive cropping and small-scale cultivation this fall.
Cost: $15 ($10 for garden members and volunteers)

Peter Rabbit’s Salad Garden — Aug. 23
Specialty lettuces, greens, edible flowers and herbs are perfect choices for a family-friendly salad garden. Growing greens with a diversity of colors and textures makes eating salads fun. Participants will learn the basics of growing fall salad vegetables and will sow a veggie container garden to take home. This program is designed for an adult and child pair, but individuals also are welcome.
Cost: $25 per container ($20 for garden members and volunteers)
Time: 9-11 a.m.

Beginning Jewelry Making — Aug. 9, 16 and 23
The Beginning Jewelry Making class can help you design and make the perfect piece of jewelry that will have all of your friends talking. You will learn the basics of closing a necklace, which string to use, how to use crimping pliers and more. If you do not have a clue about how to start making your own jewelry or you just feel a little rusty, this is the class for you.
Cost: $35, including materials

Advanced Jewelry Making – Aug. 9, 16, and 23
Learn how to work with multiple strands and to work with beads in ways you never thought were possible. You also will be taught color composition so your jewelry is the prettiest it can be. If you have taken Beginning Jewelry Making or have a good handle on jewelry-making basics, then you are ready to move on to Advanced Jewelry Making.
Cost: $45, including materials

Garden gift shops
The Garden Gift Shop and the Campbell Geology Museum Gift Shop offer unique gifts for children and adults, including handcrafted gift items by local artists, gardening and geology books, T-shirts, logo items, jewelry and more. The Garden Gift Shop is located at the Fran Hanson Discovery Center and is open 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Saturday. The Campbell Geology Museum is open 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesday-Saturday and 1-5 p.m. Sunday. Call (864) 656-3405 for more information.

Garden hours of operation
The Botanical Garden is open from dawn to dusk 365 days a year. Discovery Center and Garden Gift Shop hours: 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Saturday. Admission is free.
Geology Museum hours: 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesday-Saturday and 1-5 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $3 for adults and $2 for children 12 and under. Annual passes are available.

The Garden and Geology Museum are located on the Clemson University campus at the intersection of U.S. 76 and Perimeter Road. The garden encompasses 295 acres of gardens, streams and woodlands and is open year-round from sunrise to sunset, free of charge.
