4-H20 water quality camp scheduled for June 17-19

DARLINGTON COUNTY — Clemson extension 4-H and Kalmia Gardens of Coker College will sponsor a 4-H20 water quality and outdoor adventure camp June 17-19. The event will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day at the Kalmia Gardens Education Center in Hartsville. The cost is $15.

The camp is an educational program designed to teach young people to understand, appreciate and protect life in and around the lake.

Participants will learn about the aquatic environment, how a watershed works, how it affects the quality of water resources and how to protect the water environment.

They also will learn how to navigate in a natural environment with GPS training from Beverly Connelly, Clemson extension agent in Beaufort County, and about insects and the importance of insects in a natural environment from Rick Willey, Clemson extension 4-H natural resources specialist.

“These skills will enable youth to make decisions that will affect the environment in which they live,” said Alma Harris, Clemson extension agent and 4-H coordinator in Darlington.

Participants will get to learn from a special “bug lady” about aquatic and terrestrial environments and from programs taught by the S.C. Forestry Commission and Department of Natural Resources about such topics as tree identification, boat safety, fishing and canoeing.
