Extension services offering advanced master gardener training
CLEMSON — The Clemson University, Alabama and Georgia extension services are joining to offer advanced master gardener training Aug. 19, Sept. 16 and Oct. 14. The cost is $100 per person for the complete three-day training.
This is specialized training to teach how home landscapes can have a significant impact on water quality and quantity and how it can be minimized by sound landscape design and maintenance practices. The program is called “Advanced Concepts in Water Smart Landscape Design.”
Morning classroom lessons will be from 9 a.m. to noon followed by hands-on activities in the afternoons. The classroom portion will be broadcast to sites across the three states using Internet technology.
The afternoon portions are intended to result in the construction of a public demonstration area based on the needs of the local organizer. Potential activities include rain garden construction, rain barrel installation and stream assessment.
In South Carolina, the program will be offered in Greenville and Charleston counties. If other counties want to host a site, contact Cory Tanner at (864) 232-4431, ext. 122.
The program is designed for master gardeners and extension agents. Master gardeners will be expected to conduct at least one public education activity in this subject area within one year of the training.
“Landscape Planning and Design” is scheduled Aug. 19 to be taught by Clemson extension agent Cory Tanner. “Finer Points of Landscape Design: Function, Maintenance and Management” will be taught by Frank Henning of the University of Georgia Extension Service Sept. 16. “Making the Connection: Our Landscape, Our Stream Our Watershed” will be taught Oct. 14 by Eve Brantley and Kerry Smith of the Alabama Extension Service.
For more information or to register, contact Tanner at (864) 232-4431, ext. 122.
