Clemson University to host state beekeepers July 17-19
CLEMSON — The South Carolina Beekeepers Association will hold its summer meeting at Clemson University’s Poole Agricultural Center auditorium July 17-19. The cost is $10 for members, $15 per family and $15 for non-members.
The meeting is for beekeepers and anyone who has an interest in beekeeping.
The program will start at 1 p.m. July 17 with a one-day beginner-level beekeeping short course.
The general session will start at 8 a.m. July 18 with workshops following in the afternoon. The meeting will wrap up on July 19 with a general session beginning at 8 a.m. and ending at noon
Topics of discussion will include: effects of varroa and small hive beetles on crop pollination; news on colony collapse disorder and associated research; Africanized honey bees; honey bee queen issues; removal of bees from structures; small hive beetle control; protecting bee colonies from bears; and other general topics on beekeeping.
Featured speakers for the general session and workshops on July 18-19 will include: David Tarpy from North Carolina State University, Raleigh; Wyatt Mangum from the University of Mary Washington, Fredericksburg, Va.; Keith Delaplane from the University of Georgia, Athens; Ann Harmon from Flint Hill, Va.; Edd Buchanan from Black Mountain, N.C., and Eric Mills from Timmonsville, S.C.
A barbecue pork and baked chicken dinner is planned for the evening of July 18. The cost is $6 a plate. There also will be a honey and beeswax competition during the meeting.
