Clemson Concrete Canoe Team finishes seventh in national competition

CLEMSON — The Clemson University Concrete Canoe team paddled into seventh place at this year’s 21st annual American Society of Civil Engineers' Concrete Canoe Competition in Montreal, Canada.

Clemson's Concrete Canoe Team finished seventh in the national competition.Teams from Clemson have won three national concrete canoe titles in 15 years of participation in the event.

Thirteen students from the civil engineering program made the trip. Along with paddling their custom-designed concrete canoe in divisions such as men’s sprint and women’s long distance, students competed in areas that included a design paper and presentation. The Concrete Canoe team had taken first place in the ASCE Student Chapter Carolinas Conference at North Carolina A&T State University to advance to nationals held at Ecole de Technologie Superieure in Montreal.

“The team did an outstanding job,” said team adviser and civil engineering professor Serji Amirkhanian. “This year was one of the toughest competitions I have seen.”

Other teams competing this year included the University of Nevada, Reno; the University of California, Berkeley; Ecole de Technologie Superieure; and California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. Those teams were the top four, respectively. The competition included 22 teams from the United States and Canada.
