Zaczek picked to lead Clemson languages department
CLEMSON — Barbara Zaczek, professor of Italian, has been chosen to serve as interim chairwoman of the Clemson University languages department.
Zaczek has been a member of the Clemson faculty since 1993. In addition to standard language and literature courses, she has taught a variety of interdisciplinary courses combining comparative literature, literary and feminist theory, history and art.
Her current research interests focus on representation of Fascism and World War II, especially the questions of memory and identity, in recent Italian and Eastern European fiction.
Zaczek has written numerous articles on Italian literature and culture, as well as two books, including “Censored Sentiments — Letters and Censorship in Epistolary Novels and Conduct Material” from University of Delaware Press.
A native of Poland, she is fluent in English and Italian.
Zaczek’s formal education includes studies in Italy, England, Poland and the United States. She holds a master’s degree from Jagiellonian University in Poland as well as an M.A. and a Ph.D. from the University of Oregon.
At Clemson University, Zaczek was instrumental in establishing a minor in Italian and is working to develop an Italian major.
