Beginners certified beekeeping course being offered

PICKENS — The Pickens County Beekeepers Association is accepting registrations for a certified beginners beekeeping course beginning at 7 p.m. on Feb. 2 for six continuous weeks at the Pickens County Extension Office, 222 S. Main St., Pickens.

The cost is $35 for individuals, $45 for couples and $15 for youths under age 16. The price includes a course booklet, certification test fee and membership in the Pickens County Beekeepers Association.

The program is a complete introduction to the art and science of beekeeping. There will be lectures and presentations by regional beekeepers and featured experts; demonstrations and hands-on opportunities; and introductions to local and national support facilities and organizations.

“Honey bees are important to our economy and way of life, not just for the sweet honey they produce, but also for the benefit they provide by pollination of crops,” said Charlotte Anderson, Pickens County Beekeepers Association program manager.

Class participants will be eligible to win one of two complete hives. The package will include all the basics needed to begin a beekeeping adventure, including the bees. This project is funded by donations from area businesses and individuals. The Pickens County Beekeepers Association is accepting sponsors for the scholarship program now.

Space is limited to 30 students. To register or for more information, contact Charlotte Anderson at 864-878-8593 or cdanderson1@charter.net; Mary Bell, 864-878-4273 or minbell@mindspring.com; or Denise Blecke, 864-878-7592 or dblecke@hotmail.com.
