Joseph W. Roggenbuck wins Benton H. Box Award
CLEMSON — A professor emeritus from Virginia Tech was presented the Benton H. Box Award Oct. 8 at Clemson University’s annual George B. Hartzog Environmental Awards luncheon.
Joseph W. Roggenbuck, professor emeritus of natural resource recreation, has served on the Virginia Tech faculty since 1977, teaching and conducting research on outdoor recreation and park management.
The Benton H. Box Award recognizes a teacher who “inspires in students the quest for knowledge and encourages curriculum innovation,” especially that which involves the environmental ethic.
Roggenbuck is the author or co-author of approximately 100 books and professional journal articles and is past associate editor of two professional journals. In 2000, he was elected to the Academy of Leisure Sciences.
Brett Wright, chairman of the Clemson University department of parks, recreation and tourism management (PRTM), presented the award at the annual program and lecture series named for Hartzog, director of the National Park Service from 1964-1973.
The Hartzog Fund at Clemson University allows the PRTM department to sponsor the Hartzog Lecture Series in Resource Management.
Established in 1966, Clemson’s PRTM department is one of the largest and oldest of its type in North America. The department has enjoyed a longstanding relationship with the National Park Service and other federal and state land management agencies.
