South Carolina Botanical Garden sets events for October

Fall Plant Sale
The Fall Plant Sale, the garden’s biggest fundraiser, has the area’s best selection of ornamental trees, shrubs and perennials. S.C. Botanical Garden staff and master gardeners of the foothills will be on site to help select the best plants for your landscape, including unique plants, natives and drought-tolerant varieties.

Saturday, Oct. 4, 9 a.m.-1 p.m: Public plant sale

Garden Yoga every Thursday
Renee Gahan leads Vinyasa Yoga classes that are open to everyone. In Vinyasa Yoga, students move through a series of postures focusing on the breath. Attention is paid to proper alignment and guidance is provided in how to develop poses in the body. For more information, visit http://clemsonyoga.typepad.com/

First Friday Nature Walk Oct. 3
Meet at the Red Caboose for an informative walk with naturalist and Clemson University professor David Bradshaw. Wear comfortable shoes and appropriate dress. Walks generally last between one and two hours.

Location: Meet at the Red Caboose parking area
Garden Education: Plant Selection for the Upstate
Fall provides ideal growing conditions for plant establishment and growth, with warm soil temperatures and usually adequate moisture. Talks will be about selecting plants that will thrive in your landscape, whether it’s sun or shade, and how to choose plants that will suit your needs and gardening style. This program is designed for beginning and intermediate gardeners who’d like to expand their gardening skills. Afterward the class will visit the members’ reception at the plant sale area.

Fee: Free; open to members only (you may join onsite for $35/individual, $50/family)

Garden Education: Native Perennials for Pollinators
Many South Carolina native perennials are tough, attractive and deserve wider use in gardens. Join nursery owner Christi Bruner from her family’s native plant nursery, Carolina Wild, to learn about her favorite local natives. She will be showcasing plants that attract bees, butterflies and other pollinators.

Garden Education: Waterwise Gardening
The continuing drought in the Upstate has been a significant stress for many plants. Learn how to make your garden less reliant on additional water through careful plant selection, landscaping and mulching.

Interpreting Nature Workshop
Do you like to share your enthusiasm about nature with children or adults? Join us for a workshop focused on effective interpretive strategies and techniques. We’ll discuss ways to encourage engagement and interest in small or large group settings. The workshop is suitable for anyone interested in sharing nature with others, whether as a program facilitator or with members of your family.

Fee: $20 ($15 for members and volunteers)

Fall Color Hike
Enjoy the fall color of the S.C. Botanical Garden and look for other signs indicating the onset of colder months. The hike is appropriate for all ages, but strollers and other wheeled devices are not recommended, as it will be off trails and crossing creeks.

Art Gallery Feature: Landscape Paintings by William Jameson – Ongoing
On display Oct. 9 to Jan. 12, 2009, the gallery of the Fran Hansen Discovery Center showcases the work of William Jameson. A South Carolina native, Jameson draws on his love to history and nature to create introspective landscapes embodying the full range of local color and contrasts. Rejecting the term “scenes,” Jameson defines his landscapes as “explorations.” His compositions go beyond mere depictions of surface beauty to reveal the mystery and profound power of nature.

The Work of Elizabeth Belser Fuller – Ongoing
See the new additions to the collection of watercolors, acrylics and mixed-media works by native South Carolinian and special friend of the garden Elizabeth Belser Fuller. The collection includes a set of paintings from the island of Dominica and quilt “Garden Escape” by Marilyn Wall and Diana Pickens that was commissioned by Fuller in 2005. A $2 suggested donation supports the gallery.

Garden gift shops
The Garden Gift Shop and the Campbell Geology Museum Gift Shop offer unique gifts for children and adults, including handcrafted items by local artists, gardening and geology books, T-shirts, local food items, jewelry and more. The shop is located at the Fran Hanson Discovery Center and is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday-Saturday. The Campbell Geology Museum is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday-Saturday and 1-5 p.m. Sunday. Garden hours of operation
The South Carolina Botanical Garden is open from dawn until dusk 365 days a year.
The Garden and Geology Museum are located on the Clemson University campus at the intersection of U.S. 76 and Perimeter Road. The garden encompasses 295 acres of display gardens, nature trails, woodlands and streams, and is open year-round from sunrise to sunset, free of charge.
