Clemson’s Air Force ROTC program names new commandant
CLEMSON — Col. Michael R. Mendonca has taken the position of Air Force ROTC commandant for recruiting, training and educating future Air Force officer candidates at Clemson University.
His responsibilities as the senior Air Force officer on campus include detachment commander and chairman of the department of aerospace studies with the rank of full professor. He instructs the evolution of air and space power, a sophomore-level class.
“My wife Terri and I are thrilled to be part of the Clemson University team and look forward to our assignment here," he said.
"The staff of detachment 770, The Flyin' Tigers, will continue the tradition of Clemson's AFROTC program and develop superb leaders for the U.S. Air Force. I intend to capitalize on the existing excellent program and work to increase the number of cadets that make it all the way through to commissioning as a second lieutenant in the Air Force. Additionally, I'd like to ensure the Flyin' Tigers receive recognition as one of the top detachments out of the 144 across the nation, supporting Clemson University's quest for a top-20 ranking.”
Mendonca received his commission and Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering from the United States Air Force Academy in 1983. Mendonca has served in a variety of operations and staff positions throughout his career and has flown a variety of aircraft in his time as a pilot. Some of his awards include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal and Air Medal.
