Clemson professor named president-elect of Out-of-School Time group

CLEMSON — David Fleming of Clemson University recently was named program chairman and president-elect of Out-of-School Time, a national special interest group of the American Educational Research Association (AERA) that studies learning after the school bell rings.

Out-of-School Time focuses on school programs and activities that take place both before and after school hours, as well as during summer and holiday vacations.

Fleming was elected in March at the AERA’s annual meeting in New York. His duties as president-elect will include preparing and reviewing presentations at Out-of-School Time’s national conferences in San Diego.

“This is a new area of research and it’s gaining a lot of steam,” Fleming said. “There’s only so much that can be done during the school day.”
 
Fleming will also work with Out-of-School Time members to establish new research paradigms at an upcoming pre-conference session for this fairly new field.

Fleming is the Eugene T. Moore School of Education’s graduate coordinator as well as an assistant professor. He is also the principal investigator for a local Out-of-School Time project called GoalPOST (Goal-oriented Performance in Out of School Time), a recently funded program in Anderson County schools that will provide after-school assistance and activities to elementary school children.
