Clemson breaks ground for Scroll of Honor Memorial

CLEMSON – Memorial Stadium at Clemson University is getting closer to having a memorial to recognize alumni killed in the line of duty.

Artists' rendering of the Scroll of Honor Memorial.Ground was broken for the Scroll of Honor Memorial adjacent to the East Gate of the football stadium Thursday.

“Since 1942 when Memorial Stadium was named to honor Clemson alumni who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country, there has been no mention of these alumni on or near the stadium,” said retired Air Force Brig. Gen. Hap Carr, past chairman of the Clemson Corps. “Our groundbreaking for the Scroll of Honor is the first visible step in a long process that will allow us to finally recognize these heroes who have made it possible for us to enjoy the freedoms we so richly cherish.”

The memorial is made possible by a $475,000 commitment from the Clemson Class of 1958, the Clemson Corps, the Clemson Athletic Department and the Clemson Alumni Association, as well as donations from Clemson friends.

The Clemson Corps was established in 1999 as a constituent group within the Alumni Association to help raise funds through alumni contributions to create scholarships for ROTC cadets and to help perpetuate Clemson’s military history.

The ring of trees shows the placement of the Scroll of Honor Memorial outside the east gate of the stadium.“Clemson University has a strong military heritage dating back to the first Corps of Cadets formed in 1893.  During those 115 years, at least 472 Clemson alumni have given the ultimate sacrifice in service to their country,” said retired Col. Danny Rhodes, past chairman of the Clemson Corps and co-chairman of the Scroll of Honor Project Committee. “The Scroll of Honor Memorial will provide a living memorial to those 472 heroes. We are thankful for the hundreds of alumni, friends and family members who have helped us make this memorial a reality.”
