Clemson professor to outline past and future of the economy
CLEMSON – While financial concerns continue to make headlines, Clemson University economist Scott Baier will outline the fine points of how the economy has suffered and how it will fare in the future.
Baier will speak on “The U.S. Economy: Looking Backward and Going Forward” during a breakfast event on Wednesday, April 22, at the Greenville Chamber of Commerce, 24 Cleveland St. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. and the program begins at 8 a.m. Cost is $8 and registration is encouraged at http://business.clemson.edu/rencenter/RenaissanceCtr.htm.
Baier came to Clemson in 2001. In 2007 and 2008 he served as an economic adviser to former President George W. Bush and provided economic analyses of current events and pending legislation. He assisted in the production of the “Economic Report of the President.”
Baier researches international trade, economic growth and development. His project, “The Causes and Consequences of Regionalization,” was supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation. Two of Baier’s articles have been recognized with “best paper” awards in recent years. His recent paper “How Important are Capital and Total Factor Productivity for Economic Growth?” won the 2007 Best Article Award in Economic Inquiry. His paper on “The Growth of World Trade” won the Bhagwati Award for the best paper in the Journal of International Economics in 2001 and 2002.
Baier received his Ph.D. from Michigan State in 1996. From 1996-2000 he served on the faculty at the University of Notre Dame. He also is a visiting scholar at the Federal Reserve Bank in Atlanta.
