Clemson Extension announces series of home agricultural classes May 19-June 9
ANDERSON — Clemson Extension in Anderson County is offering a series of classes called "Farming 101" at the Anderson County Extension office, 313 S. Towers Street, Anderson from May 19 to June 9.
The classes will cover different areas of home vegetable and fruit gardening, raising chickens and farm animals, lawn care and safe home canning.
Each course will start at 7 p.m. and will run for approximately two hours. The cost is $20 per person, per class or $30 per couple, per class. Participants may sign up for as many sessions as they would like. Each session will require at least 10 students to pre-register in order to hold the class.
The courses include:
May 19: Home Gardening - Cory Tanner, Clemson Extension consumer horticulture agent, Greenville County, will talk about starting and managing a home garden.
May 26: Small Fruits - Howard Hiller, Clemson Extension agent, Oconee County, will teach about growing and managing small fruits.
May 28: Food Preservation - Rhonda Matthews, Clemson Extension food and nutrition agent, Abbeville County, will teach how to properly and safely can, freeze and preserve home-grown vegetables and fruits.
June 2: Meat Animals on Small Acreage - Chris Talley, Clemson Extension livestock agent, Anderson County, will provide information on the production of sheep, goats, beef cattle and swine on small acreage.
June 4: Backyard Flock - Mickey Hall, Clemson University associate professor of poultry science, will talk about starting a backyard flock of chickens for egg production.
June 9: Home Lawn Maintenance and Irrigation - Marty Watt, Clemson Extension agent, Anderson County, and Bryan Smith, Clemson Extension agent, Laurens County, will teach about maintaining a healthy and beautifully landscaped lawn and irrigation systems for home use.
