Clemson named to presidential honor roll for community service
CLEMSON — The Corporation for National and Community Service has named Clemson University to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for exemplary service efforts and service to America’s communities.
Launched in 2006, the Community Service Honor Roll is the highest federal recognition a school can achieve for its commitment to service-learning and civic engagement. Honorees for the award were chosen based on a series of selection factors, including the scope and innovation of service projects, percentage of student participation in service activities, incentives for service and the extent to which the school offers academic service-learning courses.
Clemson was recognized for programs including the Habitat for Humanity Campus Chapter, which was recognized as 2008 Habitat for Humanity International Campus Chapter of the Year; FeelGood, a student organization dedicated to ending world hunger one grilled cheese sandwich at a time; and Colleges Against Cancer’s Relay for Life, the largest collegiate relay in South Carolina.
Clemson had an estimated 8,400 students engaged in service and an estimated 90,800 student service hours for the 2007-2008 school year.
“We are honored to receive this national recognition and are proud of our students’ commitment to serving the community,” said Jennifer Shurley, associate director of leadership and engagement at Clemson University.
Overall, the corporation honored six schools with Presidential Awards. In addition, 83 were named as Honor Roll With Distinction members and 546 schools as Honor Roll members. In total, 635 schools were recognized. A full list is available at www.nationalservice.gov/honorroll.
