4-H Summer Fun workshops begin in June

BAMBERG — The Bamberg County 4-H Youth Development Program is offering summer youth workshops.They are:

Mosaics with Angie Sandifer for ages 8-14 will be from 2 to 4 p.m. June 9-12. Pieces can be entered in the Orangeburg County or S.C. State Fair. The class will be held at Main Street Garden and Gifts and the cost is $75. 

Archery at AJA for ages 8-14 will be held from 9 a.m. to noon June 10. Participants will learn Junior Olympic Archery Basics with Genesis Compound Bows. The cost is $15, which includes a 4-H T-shirt. The cost is $15.

4-H20 Pontoon Classroom for ages 9-12 will be held from 9 a.m. to noon June 15-18 at Barnwell State Park and Lake Edgar Brown. The class will teach about watersheds, water quality and life in the water. Activities include deep-water sampling, shocking fish, taking stream water samples and identifying aquatic organisms, fishing, tackle crafting and nature frames. The class size is limited to 20 and the cost is $40.

Camp Cluck-Cluck for ages 9-14 will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 29-July 3 at the Bamberg Extension Office. Participants will learn how to make barbecued chicken, cook omelets and dye eggs. They will visit a commercial laying house and learn about the poultry industry. The cost is $50, which includes a 4-H T-shirt and 4-H Poultry Project book.

4-Hoots for Owls for ages 5-10 will be held from 9 to 11:30 a.m. July 9.  Participants will get to dissect owl pellets and make a talon keychain. The cost is $15, which includes a 4-H T-shirt.

Birds of Prey Center Family Trip to Awendaw Island July 10. Youths ages 5-10 and families will meet at the Bamberg Extension Office at 8 a.m. Participants will travel get to explore the center and watch flight demonstration then have lunch at Sewee Restaurant. The cost for adults is $12 and youths are $10. 

Owl Prowl for ages 5-11 and their families July 11 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Barnwell State Park. Walk the park with Park Ranger Alama Holmes as she calls owls. Participants are asked to bring a flashlight. 

Sewing Fun for ages 9-14 will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 21-24 at the Bamberg Extension Office. Participants will get to learn basic sewing skills while making pajama bottoms and a pillowcase. There will be a textile field trip to Joann Fabrics in Columbia with lunch at the Russell House on the University of South Carolina campus on July 23. Participants are asked to bring fabric for pajamas and pillowcase, oversized T-shirt and bag lunches. The cost is $35, which includes a Let's Sew book, pattern, supplies, a 4-H T-shirt and bag lunches.

Scrapbooking Fun for ages 9-14 will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 6-7. Participants will make one 4-H page with a picture of themselves or their 4-H project to be entered in the 2009 S.C. State Fair. The cost is $10, which includes scrapbooking pages and a 4-H T-shirt. 

Healthy Lifestyles Camp for ages 9-19 will be held 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 16-18 in Orangeburg. Participants will prepare for the state contest on Aug. 6.
