4-H Summer Fun workshops scheduled for June-July

BARNWELL — The Barnwell County 4-H Youth Development Program is offering summer youth workshops. They are:

4-H20 Pontoon Classroom for ages 9-12 will be held 9 a.m. to noon June 15-18 at Barnwell State Park and Lake Edgar Brown. Participants will learn about watersheds, water quality and life in the water. Activities include deep-water sampling, shocking fish, taking stream water samples and identifying aquatic organisms, fishing, tackle crafting and nature frames. Participants need to have completed the fourth to sixth grades. The cost is $40, which includes all supplies for sampling, student manual, Secchi disks and 4-H T-shirt. Class is limited to 20 participants.

Advanced Pottery sponsored by Barnwell Arts Council for ages 9-14 to be held from 9 a.m. to noon June 15-17 and June 29-30 at Guinyard Butler Middle School. Youths must have some experience with pottery. Pieces can be entered in the Orangeburg County or the South Carolina State fairs. Spaces are limited. The cost is $40, which includes a 4-H T-shirt.

Archery with Barnwell County FFA for ages 8-14 to be held 9 a.m. to noon July 7. Participants can learn Junior Olympic Archery Basics with Genesis Compound Bows. The cost is $15, which includes a 4-H T-shirt.

Owl Prowl for ages 5-11 and their families to be held from 7 to 9 p.m. July 11 at Barnwell State Park. Participants will walk the park with Park Ranger Alma Holmes as she calls owls. Participants are asked to bring a flashlight. This event is free. Owl pellet dissection and talon key-chain activities will be available for a charge of $15.

Sewing Fun for ages 9-14 to be held 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 29-31 at the Ag Heritage Learning Center in Blackville. Participants will learn basic sewing skills while making pajama bottoms and a pillowcase and may enter the items in the 2009 State Fair. There will be a textile field trip to Joann Fabrics in Columbia with lunch at the Russell House on the University of South Carolina campus on July 23. Participants are asked to bring fabric for pajamas and pillowcase, oversized T-shirt and bag lunches. The cost is $35, which includes a Let's Sew book, pattern, supplies and a 4-H T-shirt.
