Background information on Richard H. Pennell Center for Real Estate Development

The Center for Real Estate Development was established in 2001 by Terry Farris, the current academic director of Clemson University’s Masters in Real Estate Development program. Housed in the College of Architecture, Arts and Humanities and the College of Business and Behavioral Science, the center’s administrative home is within the department of planning and landscape architecture.

This August, the first doctoral student who has worked in the center and taught in the master's program, Robert Benedict, will graduate with a Ph.D. in environmental design and planning.

Recent projects
The center has an ongoing grant with the Counselors of Real Estate to assist in funding travel expenses and events for a counselor-in-residence program that will bring in four preeminent counselors. In February, the center invited Hugh Kelly, CRE, a real estate expert from New York City, to make three presentations to the students and general public: “What Makes a 24-Hour City and Why Should Real Estate Investors Care?” “Affordable Housing in New York City” and “The Financial Crisis and its Impact on the Financial Community of New York City.”

The center hosted a presentation for the National Teach-In on Global Warming Solutions. Jay Cariveau of Metromont Corp. made a presentation on precast concrete and the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) points associated with using many of the company’s products. Other research projects published out of the center include work on senior housing as an investment alternative, graduate real estate education and the quality of real estate publications. Faculty members associated with the center presented papers at the annual meetings of the American Real Estate Society, the European Real Estate Society and The Asian Real Estate Society. Faculty members also are involved in leadership positions of the Urban Land Institute-South Carolina Council, the National Association of Office and Industrial Properties, the Counselors of Real Estate, the Society of Industrial and Office Realtors and others.
