Clemson professor of education receives dissertation award
CLEMSON — The American Educational Research Association has awarded Clemson University professor Curtis Brewer the Distinguished Dissertation Award in the division of Social Context of Education.
Brewer, assistant professor of educational leadership in Clemson’s Eugene T. Moore School of Education, will receive the award at the association's annual meeting in San Diego in April.
His study, “Interpreting the Policy Past: the Relationship Between Education and Antipoverty Policy During the Carter Administration,” examined how people perceived the link between education and antipoverty policies in the late 1970s.
The dissertation was part of the requirements for Brewer’s Ph.D. in educational administration at the University of Texas at Austin, a degree he received in 2008.
“I was honored that my dissertation chair at Texas nominated my work, and then that it was selected through a blind review process by a national organization,” Brewer said. “This meant that it resonated with at least the people on the committee, which was exciting.”
Brewer said he is working on ways to extend his research on the relationships between education and antipoverty policies.
He received his bachelor’s in history and his master’s in secondary education at the University of North Texas.
