Fort Mill resident recognized for commitment to public health education
CLEMSON — Erin Hunter of Fort Mill, who graduated from Clemson University May 8 with a degree in health science, was honored with the 2009 Susan Delony Academic Achievement Award from the university’s Michelin Career Center.
The Michelin Career Center honors a junior or senior student who has maintained a high academic average and shown commitment to his or her field of study. The award honors Susan Delony, the first and only dean of women at Clemson University.
Hunter, with an emphasis in health promotion and education, is a member of the National Professional Health Educator Honorary. She also interned with Teen Health Connection in Charlotte, where she conducted research and helped to plan health-promotion programs for a predominantly Hispanic and African-American population. She has presented her research at numerous public health conferences and will present a paper she wrote examining the effects the Senegalese water crisis has on the lives and health of the country’s women at an upcoming state conference.
“It was humbling to learn about the great woman Susan Delony is and how she has so greatly contributed to Clemson University,” Hunter said. “Susan Delony was committed to academic achievement inside and outside the classroom, and I am truly honored to have received the award named for her.”
Hunter will be teaching at a French high school to improve her language skills in preparation for working with populations in French-speaking Africa.
