Clemson extension to host pond-management workshop in McCormick County

McCORMICK — Pond management has become a growing concern to landowners in the Abbeville, Edgefield, Greenwood and McCormick areas.

To help address these issues, Clemson extension is hosting a pond-management workshop designed for all types of landowners, from first-time pond owners and multi-generational landowners, to those thinking of building a pond on their properties for the first time.

The course is from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 20 at the Plum Branch Saddle Club in McCormick County. The cost of the workshop is $20 if participants register by May 15, and $25 after May 15. Lunch will be provided.

Topics to be covered include: pond construction; general pond management; liming and fertilizing; fish stocking and harvest rates; types and levels of aquatic plants; aquatic weeds and control methods; water quality; and buffers.

The guest speaker will be aquaculture specialist Jack Whetstone from Clemson University's Baruch Institute of Coastal Ecology and Forest Science in Georgetown.

Also speaking about pond construction will be the Edgefield County USDA-Natural Resource Conservation Service's district conservationist Shaun Worley and soil technician Lee Nicholson.
