Clemson wins 23rd annual battle for blood

CLEMSON — Clemson University retains bragging rights for the annual Clemson-USC blood drive, an offshoot of the longstanding football rivalry.

Clemson students, staff, faculty and fans rolled up their sleeves for a winning total of 3,376 units vs. 3,316 for the University of South Carolina.

Organized at Clemson by Alpha Phi Omega National Service Fraternity, the joint drive has collected more than 76,748 units in its 23-year history. Since each unit of blood can potentially save the lives of three people, more than 230,000 lives may have been saved as a result of the annual drive.

Clemson leads the competition with 14 wins over USC, including a win last year that snapped a five-year winning streak by USC.
