Clemson Concrete Canoe and Steel Bridge teams advance to national events

CLEMSON — The Clemson University Concrete Canoe and Steel Bridge teams once again have earned invitations to national competitions. This will be the 13th year in a row the Steel Bridge team is in the national competition and the 15th year for the Concrete Canoe team. The teams have three national concrete canoe titles and one national steel bridge title under their belts.

Canoe competitors in 2005The Concrete Canoe team took first place in the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Student Chapter Carolinas Conference at North Carolina A&T State University to advance this year. Eight schools competed. The Concrete Canoe nationals will be in June at École de Technologie Supérieure in Montreal, Canada.

The Steel Bridge team placed second in competition and will participate in the national competition in May at the University of Florida in Gainesville.

Clemson competed in eight events, placing in the top three positions in seven. Thirty-two students from the department of civil engineering participated.                                                                               

Clemson is a nationally recognized research university where approximately 5,500 students are enrolled in engineering and science undergraduate and graduate Canoe competitors in 2005courses, with 350 faculty members in the college. The department of civil engineering is one of 20 of the largest civil engineering departments in numbers of degrees awarded in the United States.
