Clemson University geneticist Haiying Liang is seeking to breed fast-growing poplars to make them a cost-effective sustainable source for the biofuel ethanol. Poplars produce a substance called lignin that inhibits the amount of ethanol they can produce. She is working to grow poplars that have less lignin without harming the trees' growth.
