Engineering and science are cool at Clemson for rising 6-8 grade girls at a special camp this week. Campers learn “it’s a girl thing” when they roll up their sleeves to design robots, crack secret codes, observe bypass surgery on a bovine heart, build bridges and homes and test them in the wind tunnel. Girls in Project WISE (Women in Science and Engineering) will learn about electrical engineering, parks/recreation and tourism (non-traditional sports), math, civil engineering, leadership and self-esteem. Duke Energy is the sponsor. For details, contact Serita Acker (656-7472) or Susan Polowczuk in News Services (656-2063 or 207-1165).
A group of incoming freshmen who are first generation college students will get a jump-start on their college careers with the FIRST program. Fifty first-generation students who are entering majors in the College of Agriculture, Forestry and Life Sciences or the College of Engineering and Science will spend two-and-a-half weeks on campus taking a computation science course and learning about college life. FIRST is supported by a National Science Foundation Grant and is meant to serve and retain first generation college students majoring in science, engineering or math. For more information, contact Sherry Dorris (656-1674) or Susan Benson (656-3869).
A group of incoming freshmen get a strong dose of math as part of the Math Excellence Workshop (MEW) now through Aug. 6. The program is open to all incoming Clemson University minority students majoring in computer science, engineering, the life sciences, the physical sciences or mathematics. Sponsored by the Louis Stokes-South Carolina Alliance for Minority Participation (SCAMP), a National Science Foundation-funded group; Duke Energy Foundation; the College of Engineering and Science; and the state of South Carolina, MEW has received national recognition for promoting superior mathematical understanding. Classes include pre-calculus and calculus. In addition, students attend a daily two-hour collaborative learning seminar in mathematical reasoning where they work together to solve problems. For details, contact Sue Lasser (656-5541) or Susan Polowczuk in News Services (656-2063 or 207-1165).
Clemson welcomes its newest Tigers to campus with two summer orientation sessions this week. Students and parents will learn about services available to students, chat with academic advisers, register for classes and tour campus. Monday-Tuesday and Thursday-Friday will be orientation sessions for freshmen. For details, contact Rebecca Atkinson (656-0515) or Angela Nixon in News Services (656-0382 or 280-5256).
Wednesday (July 1)
