Monday – Thursday (Aug. 3-6)

A group of incoming freshmen get a strong dose of math as part of the Math Excellence Workshop (MEW) through Aug. 6. The program is open to all incoming Clemson University minority students majoring in computer science, engineering, the life sciences, the physical sciences or mathematics. Sponsored by the Louis Stokes-South Carolina Alliance for Minority Participation (SCAMP), a National Science Foundation-funded group; Duke Energy Foundation; the College of Engineering and Science; and the state of South Carolina, MEW has received national recognition for promoting superior mathematical understanding. Classes include pre-calculus and calculus. In addition, students attend a daily two-hour collaborative learning seminar in mathematical reasoning where they work together to solve problems. Monday – Saturday (Aug. 3-8)

The Summer Science, Engineering and Architecture Enrichment Program continues this week. This program is for gifted middle and high school students interested in hands-on opportunities to experiment with scientific principles and design and build models. Twenty female students from Toho Academy in Tokyo complete the second week of English Camp this week. A highlight of the week will come Thursday when the students practice their English skills with a presentation to the Clemson Rotary Club at noon at the Ramada Inn. Saturday (Aug. 8)

Monday – Thursday (Aug. 10-13)

Not Saying, a visual arts exhibition that examines several themes in the Elizabeth Moon novel “The Speed of Dark,” Clemson’s summer reading selection, is on view in the Lee Gallery from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday in Lee Hall. The exhibition, on display until Sept. 13, features the work of four diverse artists. Friday  (Aug. 14)

Students from around the world get their first official taste of Clemson on Friday. International Student Orientation is 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the ballrooms of the Hendrix Student Center. Saturday (Aug. 15)

Clemson’s newest Tigers will move into their homes away from home today as
freshman move into residence halls across campus. Faculty, staff and community volunteers will be on hand to help lug boxes and furniture. For details, contact Doug Hallenbeck (864-656-2295) or Media Relations’ Angela Nixon (864-656-0382 or 864-280-5256).

Saturday-Sunday (Aug. 15-16)

New Clemson students will get started on the right foot with Clemson Connect, an extended orientation session for freshmen and transfer students designed to help students make academic and social connections and ease the transition into college life. Students will participate in a number of activities leading up to the start of classes, including:
Laptop workshops, held at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Saturday and 4 p.m. Sunday in various locations: Students can get Clemson-specific software and learn about safety and security measures for their computers.
New Student Convocation, Sunday, 2-4 p.m., Littlejohn Coliseum: President Jim Barker will welcome students and chemistry professor Bill Pennington will give them an introduction to academic life at Clemson. All new students will receive an Entering Year Pin.
President’s Picnic, Sunday, 4 p.m., lawn of the President’s Home. Jim and Marcia Barker will host all new students for food and fun.
Moonlight Madness, Sunday, 10:30 p.m.-1 a.m., Sikes Hall parking lot: Clemson Area Transit buses will make special trips to Walmart in Central so students can buy last-minute supplies for the new school year.
