SUGGESTED TIMELINE FOR IMPLEMENTING
THE OLWEUS BULLYING PREVENTION PROGRAM

Below is a suggested timeline for implementing the program to assist you in planning.

Keep in mind that your school will have work to do before deciding to implement the program. Click here for a checklist to help determine if your school is ready to implement the Olweus Program.

Ideally the program should be launched at the beginning of a school year (note the blue headings below). If that isn't possible, the program can also be launched in January, after the holiday break (note the dates in parentheses).

YEAR ONE

Late Winter/Early Spring (or alternatively Late Summer/Early Fall)

  1. Select members for your school's Bullying Prevention Coordinating Committee
  2. (the committee is described in detail in the Blueprint for the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program.
  3. Appoint/hire an on-site coordinator
  4. Order required and supplemental materials.

April/May (or alternatively October/November)

  1. Administer the Olweus Bully/Victim Survey
  2. Hold a 2-day training of the Bullying Prevention Coordinating Committee. Click here for information about training and consultation.
  3. After the training, hold regular meetings of the Coordinating Committee to finalize plans to implement the program
  4. .

Summer (or alternatively October/December)

  1. Input and analyze data from the Olweus Bully/Victim Questionnaire
  2. using the BVW-Stat program.
  3. Create a library of required and supplemental materials
  4. that you have ordered.

August/September (or alternatively November/December)

The Coordinating Committee will conduct a 1/2 to 1-day in-service with all school staff.

September: The Launch of the Program (or alternatively January)

  1. Hold student and parent "kick-off"
  2. to introduce the program to your student body and parents.
  3. Launch other elements of the program:
    • Post school rules against bullying
    • Begin classroom meetings, with discussion of classroom/school rules
    • Increase supervision
    • of students in "hot spots" for bullying
    • Begin staff discussion groups
    • Initiate individual meetings with students and parents, as necessary

Activities to continue through the end of the school year:

Implement all school-level, classroom-level, and individual-level components of the program

YEAR TWO

August

  1. Hold a training for new staff
  2. Begin regular meetings of the Bullying Prevention Coordinating Committee

September

Implement all school-level, classroom-level, and individual-level components of the program.

April/May (or alternatively October/November)

Re-administer the Olweus Bully/Victim Questionnaire

NOTE: The Olweus Bullying Prevention Program should have no end-date. It is not time-limited. Program elements should be incorporated into the everyday life of the school so that it continues in subsequent years.
