Scope of the Training & Ongoing Consultation

Training and consultation services include:

  • A 2-day training offered to members of a school's Bullying Prevention Coordinating Committee (BPCC). Trainings are conducted by OBPP Certified Trainers.
  • Ongoing telephone consultation for at least one full school year (18-24 months preferred) with an Certified Trainer.

Who should attend the training, and where does it take place?

As outlined in the Blueprint for the program, training is offered to members of a school’s Bullying Prevention Coordinating Committee. This committee typically consists of 8 to 13 members and include:

  • A school administrator (principal or assistant principal)
  • A teacher representative from each grade
  • A guidance counselor and/or school-based mental health professional
  • A parent
  • A member of the non-teaching staff (e.g., bus driver, cafeteria worker)
  • A school resource officer or school-based law enforcement officer (if applicable)
  • A playground supervisor (if applicable)

As the training involves much interaction between participants and the trainer and building-level planning, no more than two school committees may be trained at one time by a trainer. If two trainers are present, they may train up to three committees at one time. Trainings typically take place at the school or at a convenient location in the community.

Training Objectives

  1. Increase participants’ knowledge about the nature and prevalence of bullying among children and youth.
  2. Through interactive learning, familiarize participants with all core elements of the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program.
  3. Develop a plan (including a timeline) to implement the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program in the school.

Why is training/ongoing consultation important?

Training is important to help ensure that the BPCC at each school has the necessary information and strategies to successfully launch and sustain the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program with fidelity. The purpose of consultation is to provide ongoing assistance in the implementation of program elements, with particular attention to trouble-shooting problems areas that may arise, and helping to maintain the program over time.

What does the consultation involve?

A Certified Trainer will provide at least one full school year (18-24 months preferred) of consultation to an on-site coordinator at each school. (An on-site coordinator is a “point person” at a school.) Typically, this consultation is conducted by telephone and occurs each month for approximately one hour.

Can we opt out of the consultation and just participate in the training?

No. Training is not offered without a commitment to engage in ongoing consultation with a Certified Trainer. We have found the consultation to be important to the success and sustainability of the program.

Training/Consultation Costs

Costs of training and consultation vary slightly by trainer, region of the country, and the number of sites being trained. Below are fee guidelines.

A single trainer will charge no more than:

  • $3,000 for a 2-day training involving 1 or 2 schools’ Bullying Prevention Coordinating Committees (BPCC);
  • An additional $250 per half-day of travel time for the trainer to travel to and from the training site;
  • Travel costs for the trainer, including airfare (if appropriate), lodging, meals, and local transportation;
  • $125/hour for 12 to 24 months for telephone consultation for each school site. (Includes the cost of the phone call.)

If two trainers are present (required when 3 schools' BPCC are being trained), fees may increase accordingly, up to a maximum of $4,500 for the 2-day training.

How can my school receive training?

How does my school arrange for OBPP training?

A. Locate an OBPP Certified Trainer.

Although our trainers are given a national OBPP Certification (meaning that they may train schools anywhere in the US), you are encouraged to identify a trainer from your general area to reduce  travel costs, increase the possibility of on-site consultations, and for increased familiarity with state regulations. Trainers will  answer questions about the program, the nature of the training and consultation, their availability, and the specific training and consultation costs involved. They may also help you determine whether this program is a good fit for your school. Trainer rates will vary. Some have agreements with their states to provide training to schools at no cost. Others work for non-profit agencies or as independent contractors. All of our trainers have the ability to guide your school committees in their implementation of OBPP.

B. Obtaining an OBPP Certified Trainer within your district.

If your district has more than four school buildings, you may find it more cost effective to train a member of your own school district to become an OBPP certified trainer. Information about Training of Trainer costs and application process are found in the "OBPP Trainer Certification" section of this website.

Click here for a listing of available OBPP Certified Trainers. Trainers are listed in the state where they reside. Don't forget to check the availability of trainers in neighboring states if your school is near a state border.

If you have any questions or difficulty in finding a trainer for your school or in hosting a Trainer Certification Course in your area, please contact Jane Riese (jriese@clemson.edu), who will be happy to help.  Dr. Marlene Snyder (nobully@clemson.edu) is available to help with questions about state-wide training leadership.
