Orangeburg County F.A.C.E. Program
| Name | Beth Richardson | | Situation | Every year, 4-H youth are given the opportunity to participate in the Food and Cover Establishment (F.A.C. E.) Program. The purpose of the (FACE) program is to educate 4-H youths on the proper techniques of food plot establishment to benefit small game and other wildlife species. Last spring, we had an inner city youth who thought he may be able to place his plot on a relative's property near Rowesville, SC. However, this did not work out. As the County Forestry Agent, I was knowledgeable of contacts in the forest industry that might be willing to help.
| | Response | I placed a call to a forest industry that in the past, has not worked with the F.A.C.E project. Dempsey Forest Products owns land that they maintain for their guests to hunt on. I approached Mr. Parker Dempsey, owner of the industry, if the company would allow a 4-H youth to place a food plot on their property and keep records on that plot all summer long. He not only agreed, but employed the help of their wildlife manager to help prepare the land and assist the youth in planting the plot. | | Impact | Through the FACE program, youth learn many life skills such as responsibility, leadership, record keeping, creativity and becoming
stewards of the land. The 4-H youth won first in the county competition. He presented Dempsey Forest Products with a Plaque of Appreciation. Photographs of the youth and the Dempsey employee and an article were presented in the local newspaper. |
