4-H/Home Horticulture Agent
| Name | Leigh Joyner | | Situation | Traditionally, the Clemson Extension Service in Orangeburg County has been the resource of choice by homeowners needing help with lawn and home gardening questions and problems. Heavy demand by walk-in and phone-in clientele is typical. In addition, local assistance from the Extension Service has been requested to address water quality and other
environmental related issues. The last agent working in the Home
Horticulture program area retired in 2000 and was not replaced. The 4-H gardening and 4-H20 program needed strengthening, as well, due to the retirement of a 4-H Program Assistant and increased administrative duties assumed by the 4-H Program Coordinator. | | Response | A partnership agreement between Orangeburg County and Clemson Extension was forged resulting in funds to hire a 4-H/Home Horticulture agent. | | Impact | $26K in additional funding was brought to Clemson Extension and a total of $52K in operating funds to the Orangeburg County office. Service to Orangeburg County property owners with lawn and home gardening questions has been made immediate and personal. Youth in Orangeburg County have been provided with an agent devoted to Natural Resources, Gardening, and 4-H20 Environmental education programs. Summer educational programs have been planned. A Master Gardener program for adults is scheduled for the fall. All of these things have resulted in Orangeburg County Extension's ability to strengthen relationships with stakeholders. |
