University Style Guide

There are certain style elements that have been set for University-produced documents that also apply to Web design. Consistency of style is key in making a site look professional; the Clemson University Editorial Style Guide is the best source for consistent usage and the Visual Identity and Licensing Guidelines.

Below is a quick list of rules found in our University Style Guide.

Examples of correct abbreviations include:
Ph.D.
B.A.
M.A.
ENGL 101
GPA
a.m. and p.m.

Examples of correct punctuation include:
The College of Heath, Education and Human Development (a list of 3 or more items)
1,150 students
SAT score of 1143
January 23, 2006, was cold.
Tuesday, January 28, was sunny.
The University is within the Clemson, S.C., city limits.

Examples of correct capitalization include:
President James F. Barker
James F. Barker, president
Professor Thomas M. Keinath
Martin J. Jacobi, professor of English
pianist Lillian Harder
The chair of the School of Architecture
Classes are lowercase: freshman, sophomore, junior and senior
Seasons of study are lowercase: fall, spring, summer
Official names of departments are capitalized; other references are not:
He enrolled in the Department of Civil Engineering.
He enrolled in the civil engineering department.
