The Master Tree Farmer Program is Offered to Interested Landowners, Managers, and Students
| Name | Brian Callahan | | Situation | Forestry is the largest agricultural industry in Pickens County, SC. Thousands of acres of land are managed for timber production, wildlife enhancement, and outdoor recreation.
| | Response | The Pickens County Extension service offered landowners an opportunity to participate in the Master Tree Farmer program, which was a mini-series of educational sessions on forestry management techniques offered over satellite. The program was broadcast to various counties over multiple states, however, participants from Pickens County had the luxury of attending the live site, which was located at Clemson University in Pickens County.
| | Impact | There were a total of 18 participants in the Pickens Master Tree Farmer site. Of these 18, 100% completed the necessary attendance requirements needed to graduate from the course. Participants learned about an array of forestry-related topics, including planning techniques, forestry as an investment, pine management, hardwood management, harvesting and security, marketing and harvesting, management opportunities, services, current issues, and how to get engaged. As a result of this program, the participants anticipated a savings of at least $21,000 and earnings of at least $175,000. Sixty-four percent of participants plan to start a new management plan as a result of the MTF program. One hundred percent of participants said that they would recommend this program to a friend.
