President's Council on Community and Diversity

 Mission

To assist the University in achieving its goals of promoting and supporting an inclusive University community, President James F. Barker established the Clemson University Council on Community and Diversity in 2000. The following is the University’s statement on community and diversity, which was developed by the President’s Diversity and Community Plan Task Force and adopted by the Council on Community and Diversity.

“Clemson University aspires to create a diverse community that welcomes people of different races, cultures, ages, genders, sexual orientations, religions, socioeconomic levels, political perspectives, abilities, opinions, values and experiences. We strive to reflect these differences in our decisions, curriculum, programs and actions. Our students, faculty, staff and alumni are encouraged to continuously engage in active discourse that facilitates independent thought and sharing of ideas. We seek to ensure that underrepresented groups have equal access to a Clemson University education, and have an opportunity to share their knowledge and experiences with the world. We also want to ensure that our policies, procedures and allocation of resources help us sustain an inclusive environment that promotes success among all members of the evolving Clemson family and the communities they serve.”

Council Responsibilities

The council provides a forum for the continuous collection and review of information from all University constituencies on diversity and community goals, definitions, objectives and status. The council also identifies contributing or limiting factors to establishing a positive, supportive environment for living, learning and working at the University.
