Dear Clemson:
As we prepare to welcome our students back to campus later this week, let’s remember that among them will be more than 3,000 new students who are, in most cases, moving away from home for the very first time.
New student move-in day August 18 will be stressful for students and parents. They are excited, apprehensive, and even fearful about what lies ahead. And they bring a mountain of personal belongings that need to be unloaded and moved in. You can help ease that burden and welcome these new members of our community by joining Marcia and me as a member of a Volunteer Move-In Crew.
This Clemson tradition is a real help to these families, and an affirmation of the caring nature of our community. Each year, I hear from parents who are surprised and thankful that faculty and staff would volunteer time to help them out. Many cannot believe it.
I also hear from volunteers who thank me for providing them an opportunity to help our students in this way. They find it a very rewarding experience … and they get a T-shirt!
We again need volunteers on Saturday, August 18 from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. You may volunteer for any length of time.
If you would like to join your colleagues in saying “Welcome to Clemson” to our new resident students, please contact Laura Clay in the Housing Office at ljclay@clemson.edu or 656-1111.
Thank you for helping us to continue this important Clemson tradition.
Sincerely,
James F. Barker, FAIA
President
