Office of the President
November 27, 2007

To: Clemson University Students, Faculty & Staff

I am pleased to announce that Clemson University will, for the twenty-sixth consecutive year, observe the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., January 17 – 23, 2008.  The MLK Enhancement Committee has planned a variety of programs that will allow the Clemson family to celebrate the life and legacy of this great leader.  I would like to encourage everyone to participate in any events for which your schedules allows.

I strongly encourage the faculty to make every effort to allow the students to participate in these activities.  I also encourage all supervisors to be flexible with your staff who would like to participate in any of these events.

The MLK Celebration ties in with our goal of increasing our sense of community.  Participation is not limited to Clemson University, but also includes members of the surrounding community.  It is a wonderful opportunity for all of us to learn and expand our horizons.

Below is a list of the various programs associated with the 2008 MLK Celebration.  Please mark your calendars accordingly; the MLK Celebration has become one of Clemson’s signature events.  The seventh annual MLK Awards for Excellence in Service will be presented at the Commemorative Service on January 22nd.  I would also encourage each of you to join Marcia and me as we volunteer in service to our community on the Day of Service on January 21st. (The deadline to register is January 11, 2008).

Please work with the students, faculty and staff in your area to ensure that everyone who would like to participate in these activities has the opportunity to do so.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation and support of these various events highlighting the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

MLK CELEBRATION 2008
