Office of the President
President's Letters To Faculty and Staff

05-09-08 — I did a little something different in my remarks to the General Faculty Meeting on May 8, because I was touched, as so many have been, by the story of Carnegie Mellon Professor Randy Pausch.

04-03-08 — You are cordially invited to participate in the 2008 Summer Reading Program for all incoming freshmen.

03-27-08 — To ensure good communication about our funding priorities and other matters, I wanted to share the following presentation, which I had the opportunity to make yesterday to members of the South Carolina Senate Finance Committee. I thought you might be interested in this information.

03-10-08 — Volunteers are needed to help with an important education effort: “One Clemson: Yours, Mine and Ours.”

03-05-08 — As you know from following Inside NOW and news media reports about state funding, we face the prospect of another budget cut for 2008-2009, and we have yet to fully recover from previous cuts. Our current level of state funding is roughly equal to what we received in 1995.

12-12-07— As a family, Clemson celebrates together and we mourn together.

11-27-07— I am pleased to announce that Clemson University will, for the twenty-sixth consecutive year, observe the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., January 17 – 23, 2008.

11-16-07— We started our football season this year with a big night-time victory over Florida State on Labor Day.  We end the regular season with two big night games back-to-back.

10-29-07 — Yesterday, we learned that a house fire at Ocean Isle Beach, NC, claimed the lives of seven college students from our state, including one from Clemson and six from USC.

08-31-07 — In the months since we announced our Labor Day football game with Florida State University, “One Clemson” has evolved from a philosophy to our standard operating procedure. Hosting a sell-out game on a Monday night without disrupting the University’s academic focus and our path to the Top 20 took the combined efforts of hundreds of dedicated people from throughout campus and the community.

08-17-07 — It is wonderful to be able to say “Welcome Back” and “I have some great news for you!” in the same message. As we prepare for our students to return this weekend, I am happy to report that Clemson University is the strongest it has ever been academically and financially.

08-14-07 — As we prepare to welcome our students back to campus later this week, let’s remember that among them will be more than 3,000 new students who are, in most cases, moving away from home for the very first time.

08-01-07 — On Wednesday, August 1, I made our annual presentation to the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education (CHE). (August 1, 2007 Speech available here.)

05-18-07 — You are invited to participate in the 2007 Summer Reading Program for all incoming freshmen.

05-07-07 — As we prepare for graduation on Friday, we remember our friends at Virginia Tech who will also celebrate commencement on May 11. Let's hope the day does mark a new beginning for them as they continue their recovery.

04-17-07 — The tragedy at Virginia Tech has touched all of us at Clemson.

04-11-07 — Over the past several months, Clemson University has experienced many challenges that could have deeply divided this campus.

02-27-07 — Ordinarily I would not write to you to encourage attendance at a campus event, even one that carries the name President's Colloquium.

02-13-07 — In recent weeks I have learned that the words "One Clemson" are easy to say but harder to live. However, any success we've had as an institution is the result of operating as a unified institution.

01-30-07 — I was appalled, angered and disappointed when I learned that a group of Clemson students participated in activities at an off-campus party that appeared to mock and disparage African Americans. Many people have been offended and deeply hurt.

01-25-07 — Yesterday, I was invited to present Clemson's budget requests to the Higher Education Subcommittee of the South Carolina House Ways and Means Committee. I would like to share those comments with you this morning.

01-19-07 — Later today, we will announce that the Clemson/Florida State football game, our 2007 season opener, will be moved to Labor Day evening for national broadcast by ESPN.

12-20-06 — My warmest congratulations to all of those we have honored today and my thanks to those leaders of our faculty and staff who serve us in their presidential role. Clemson is a much better place because of all of you.

11-08-06 — The 2006 Clemson-USC Blood Drive takes place next week – November 13 – 17.

11-08-06 — Did you know that if you donate $1.00 per week to United Way you can supply breakfast for 52 children at a local shelter for abused and neglected children?

10-30-06 — I write to tell you some great news and to explain why this news is important to you. Another one of Clemson's ten year goals has been achieved.

10-19-06 — Our campus will be solidly in the national spotlight this weekend as ESPN's Game Day broadcast originates on Bowman Field against a great backdrop of Homecoming displays and the Habitat for Humanity house construction.

08-16-06 — As we prepare to welcome our students back to campus later this week, let’s remember that among them will be more than 3,000 new students who are, in most cases, moving away from home for the very first time.

06-29-06 — Walter T. Cox, Jr. passed away on Wednesday, June 28, 2006.

06-07-06 — By now you have heard that the authorities have made an arrest in connection with the death of Tiffany Marie Souers. I know that this development brings relief to many of us who were shaken by the murder. I hope it also brings some measure of peace to Tiffany's family.

05-22-06 — There were several articles in The State newspaper last week that raised many questions and led to misunderstandings about the Clemson University Restoration Institute (CURI) in Charleston.

10-12-05 — I have just returned from five days in China. Since I was representing the faculty, staff and students of Clemson University I wanted to briefly share this experience with you in hopes that it will, in a small way, add to your Clemson Experience and education.

08-24-05 — Thank you, Ambassador Kenney for your inspiring thoughts and Congratulations, Professor Post for your commitment to our students. Let me add my welcome to all who have joined us for the Victor Hurst Academic Convocation. Each of you is a vital part of Clemson and the intellectual environment we are building together.

03-14-05 — You are invited to participate in the 2005 Summer Reading Program for all incoming freshmen. This year's book, A Civil Action was written by Jonathan Harr, and on Tuesday, August 23, at 1:30 p.m., Jan Shlichtmann, the main character in A Civil Action will speak about the nonfiction thriller.

03-04-05 — One of Clemson University's 2011 goals is to establish a Phi Beta Kappa chapter, and on March 6-8, we will host a Phi Beta Kappa visiting team who will help determine if our application is successful.

02-25-05 — Although it is much to early to celebrate, the S.C. House Ways and Means Committee on Thursday approved an appropriation bill that includes good news for Clemson faculty and staff.
