Clemson University recognizes the academic challenge inherent in the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme and encourages you to apply for admission. IB graduates who score well on their Higher Level examinations will be awarded college credit as outlined in this policy.
Clemson University endorses the IB Program and awards credit for IB Higher Level scores in the following subjects.
Anthropology — A score of 5, 6, 7 will earn credit for ANTH, elective 3 credits.
Biology — A score of 5, 6, or 7 on the Higher Level Biology examination will earn credit for BIOL 103/105 and BIOL 104/106.
Business & Management — A score of 5, 6 or 7 on the Higher Level Business and Organization examination will earn credit for MGT 201.
Chemistry — In majors requiring organic chemistry, credit for CH 101 will be given for a Higher Level Chemistry examination score of 5, 6 or 7. In majors that do not require organic chemistry, credit for CH 101 will be given for a Higher Level Chemistry examination score of 5, and CH 101 and CH 102 credit will be given for a Higher Level Chemistry examination score of 6 or 7.
Economics — A score of 5, 6 or 7 on the Higher Level Economics examination will receive credit for ECON 211 and 212.
English (Language A1) — A score of 5 or 6 on the Higher Level English examination will receive credit for ENGL 212 and 101. A score of 7 on the Higher Level English examination will receive credit for ENGL 212, 101 and 103. Students with a score of 5, 6 or 7 on the Higher Level English examination will be allowed to take an exemption examination (a writing test) administered by the English Department.
Environmental Systems — A score of 5, 6 or 7 on the Higher Level Environmental Systems examination will receive credit for EN SP 200.
Foreign Languages — A score of 4 on the Higher Level Language examination will receive credit for Language 101 (French 101, German 101, Italian 101, Japanese 101, Russian 101 or Spanish 101). A score of 5, 6 or 7 on the Higher Level Language examination will receive credit for Language 101 and 102 (French 101 and 102, German 101 and 102, Italian 101 and 102, Russian 101 and 102, Japan 101 and 102, or Spanish 101 and 102).
Geography — A score of 5, 6 or 7 on the Higher Level Geography examination will receive credit for GEOG 101.
History — A score of 5, 6 or 7 on the Higher Level History-Europe examination will receive credit for HIST 173. A score of 5, 6 or 7 on the Higher Level History-Americas examination will receive credit for HIST 101 and 102.
Mathematics — For students taking the calculus sequence, MTHSC 106 and MTHSC 108, a score of 5 on the Higher Level Mathematics examination earns placement in MTHSC 108. Upon completion of MTHSC 108 with a grade of C or better, credit will be given for MTHSC 106. A score of 6 or 7 on the Higher Level Mathematics examination earns credit for MTHSC 106.
Music — A score of 5, 6 or 7 on the Higher Level Music examination will be given credit. Exact credit and courses will be determined on an individual basis.
Philosophy — A score of 5, 6 or 7 on the Higher Level Philosophy examination will receive credit for PHIL 101.
Psychology — A score of 5, 6 or 7 on the Higher Level Psychology examination will earn credit for PSYCH 201.
Theatre Arts — A score of 5, 6 or 7 on the Higher Level Theatre Arts examination will be given credit. Exact credit and courses will be determined on an individual basis.
Visual Arts — A score of 4, 5, 6 or 7 on the Higher Level Art/Design examination will earn credit for ART 103.
