Only credits transfer, not grades. Therefore, you will enter Clemson without a grade point ratio. Your class standing will be determined by your hours:
Hours Transferred |
Class |
| 0-29 | Freshman |
| 30-59 | Sophomore |
| 60-94 | Junior |
| 95 and above | Senior |
Generally, transfer credits are applicable toward degree requirements if the courses taken are:
- Earned at a school accredited by a regional accreditation association, such as the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools;
- Similar in description to the corresponding course at Clemson;
- Required or permitted as an elective in a student’s curriculum;
- Graded at least one letter grade above minimum passing mark, usually a C or better; and
- Not a duplication of credits already earned.
(Note: No course taken at a nonbaccalaureate degree institution may be used as an equivalent or substitute for any 300-or 400-level Clemson course.)
The evaluation of academic credits from other institutions rests with the faculty in each subject area. Final approval and use of these credits in your degree program is determined by your academic adviser.
How many elective credit hours transfer?
Each curriculum at Clemson includes a number of “free” or unrestricted elective hours. The maximum number allowed in your intended major is listed on the first page of your evaluation forms. Your major adviser will approve transfer of elective credits up to the stated limit. Electives above the limit are considered to be excess elective hours and are not routinely transferred for the following reasons:
- Excess elective hours are not applied toward degree requirements and, therefore, falsely inflate your academic classification as a sophomore, junior or senior.
- Under the Continuing Enrollment Policy, a student must achieve a minimum cumulative average (GPA) based on credit levels (see Undergraduate Announcements). Excess electives can effectively raise your credit level, which in turn requires you to maintain a higher GPA for continued enrollment than would otherwise be necessary.
You must sign a consent form to have excess electives added to your academic record.
Credit by Examination
Learning experiences including, but not limited to, military service schools, noncollegiate sponsored instruction, work-related experiences, etc., will not be evaluated for transfer; however, enrolled students may request credit by examination from the appropriate department for any nontransferable learning experience.
