DATE: 12/02/96 CONTACT: Sarah DuBose, (864) 656-4049 WRITER: Giles Singleton, (864) 656-3876 4-H Fire Safety Winners Honored CLEMSON -- Winners of the Clemson Extension 4-H Fire Safety Contest will be honored Dec. 7 at the South Carolina Fire Academy in Columbia. The contest was part of a statewide effort to make young people aware of fire safety issues. The theme was "Watch What You Heat ... Prevent Home Fires!" Winning entries were displayed throughout the state during October, Fire Prevention Month. Categories for the contest were Poster Art and Creative Writing for grades K-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12. First place winners in the poster art category are: Jessica A. Flythe of Marlboro County (K-2), Erin Pruett of Anderson County (3-5), and Jamie Preston (6-8) and David Dillow (9-12) of Clarendon County. In the creative writing category, first place winners are: Andrea Schronce of Laurens County (K-2), Joseph Hunsucker of Marlboro County (3-5), Melissa Leonard of Charleston County (6-8) and Kelly Newberry of Beaufort/Jasper County (9-12). Second in poster are: Brittany Cobb of Cherokee County (K-2), Jarman Tisdale of Chester County (3-5), Natalie Keith (6-8) and Derrick Boyd (9-12) of Clarendon County. Second in creative writing are: Zac Thompson of Dillon County (K-2), Laura Elizabeth Strickland of Orangeburg County (3-5), Meredith Cromer of Union County (6-8) and Stuart Morris of Charleston County (9-12). Honorable mention in poster art are: Ivory Shalom Farmer of Dillon County, (K-2), Matthew Welborn of Anderson County (6-8) and Randi Lynn Floyd of Clarendon County (9-12). Honorable mention in creative writing are: Ryan Morris of Abbeville County (K-2), Tyler Ware of Colleton County (3-5) and Jason Splawn of Pickens County (6-8). First place winners receive $100, second place winners $50, and honorable mentions $25, according to Sarah DuBose, coordinator of Clemson Extension's 4-H Fire Safety Program. Teachers of the first place winners receive $50 to be used for classroom activities and the school will receive a trophy. Contest sponsors are the Clemson University Cooperative Extension Service, the S.C. Firemen's Association, the Independent Insurance Agents of South Carolina and the S.C. Farm Bureau Insurance Companies. END
