With that in mind, Family and Consumer Science teachers recently attended a seminar designed to help them teach their students about housing issues. The in-service training was held July 31 in Columbia. The training will aid the teachers in presenting the five-day course "Housing Decisions and Alternatives," which is sponsored by Clemson University, Clemson Extension, the Manufactured Housing Institute of South Carolina (MHISC), and the Family and Consumer Science Section of the S.C. Department of Education. The course looks at everything from the range of housing options to financing methods. The study course was designed to help young people understand how they can determine their housing needs and to make them knowledgeable about the various alternatives available, said Dr. Linda L. Redmann, housing specialist with Clemson Extension. "We want the coming generations to know that owning their own home is not out of reach," said Mark Dillard, executive director of the MHISC. "We believe our teachers will find this to be a well-planned curriculum with a great video and support materials that will simplify this broad and sometimes complex subject," said Carmen R. Pough of the S.C. Department of Education. The course can also be used in secondary level classes in consumer education, social sciences, life skills and building trades, or for youth groups such as 4-H.
