The event was held Aug. 3-4 at Clemson University's T. Ed Garrison Livestock Arena. This year's Roundup boasted 213 exhibitors, an increase of 49 over last year, and 338 heifers, an increase of 46. "This is the biggest junior heifer show in the state," said Clements, an Extension animal scientist with Clemson University. People came from the Carolinas, Georgia, Florida and Tennessee." A total of 358 contestants participated in the junior cattlemen's contest, 120 more than participated last year, Clements said. Scholarships worth $500 were awarded to three young people: Melissa Perrie of Saluda, Ben Spitzer of Fair Play, and Chad Davis of North Carolina. Scholarships were awarded based on scores from an essay, the junior cattlemen's contest and showmanship. The Aug. 3 barbecue supper was attended by 540 people, and 1,200 free ice cream cones were distributed by Coburg Dairy. The roundup is sponsored by the Clemson University Cooperative Extension Service, the S.C. Cattlemen's Association and the South Carolina beef cattle industry. END
