Thirty-eight outstanding herd sire prospects will be up for bids beginning at 12:30 p.m. at Clemson University's Edisto Research and Education Center at Blackville, according to Larry Olson, Clemson Extension beef specialist and test manager. The sale will feature 20 Angus, eight Simmental, four Charolais, two Gelbvieh, two Red Angus, one Polled Hereford and one Blonde d'Aquitaine. Each has met strict standards for weight gain, frame size and breeding soundness. Eleven bulls qualified for the "South Carolina Elite" brand, which means they met superior standards. "This group of bulls broke all our test records for average daily gain," Olson said. He said that both purebred breeders and commercial cow-calf operators will find bulls in this group that will produce calves with good frame size, weighing more than 600 pounds at seven to eight months of age.
