In January, Smathers will begin a three-year term on the nine-member board. Board members work as advocates for home economics and related disciplines in higher education and to generate funding for programs crucial to family and community well-being. Smathers holds B.S. and M.S. degrees in home economics from the University of Kentucky and an Ed.D. in higher education from the University of Georgia. END
