DATE: 9/7/99 CONTACT: Bob Bacon, (843) 727-2075 EDITOR: Tom Lollis, (803) 284-3343 Sea Grant Extension Hires Coastal Hazards Specialist CHARLESTON -- The South Carolina Sea Grant Extension Program has hired a coastal hazards specialist. Elizabeth K. Judge was hired to work on reducing the risk for Lowcountry homes from strong wind, earthquakes and other natural disasters, according to Bob Bacon, program leader for Sea Grant Extension. Her duties will include demonstrations and presentations to homeowners, builders, engineers and architects on improved construction techniques and mitigation of hazards. Judge will work closely with researchers from Clemson University's Department of Civil Engineering, which has a wind engineering program that focuses on cost-effective retrofit techniques for residential construction. Her headquarters will be at 113 Calhoun Street, a laboratory, demonstration site and classroom designed to provide research resources to the public. Judge earned an undergraduate degree in civil engineering at Duke University and a master's in civil engineering from North Carolina State University. She has worked as an engineer with the Peace Corps in rural Ecuador and taught high school for two years. The S.C. Sea Grant Extension Program is a cooperative coastal outreach program of the S.C.
