Ed Garrison Livestock Arena on Friday, Sept. 15 at 10 a.m. The barn is named in honor of Dorothy Jones Bishop. "The Bishops have been enthusiastic and generous supporters of the Garrison Arena from the time we opened our doors," said arena manager Charles Williams. "We will honor them for their financial support, which enabled us to build the new horse barn." Dorothy Jones Bishop's gift of $300,000 and Deborah Bishop Clark's gift of $100,000 funded construction. The barn has 104 stalls, bringing the arena's stabling capacity to 328 permanent stalls. Also, it has an exhibitor restroom and shower facility. On the south side of the new barn, electrical capacity has been upgraded to do a better job of handling camper hookups. The new barn also has two new wash racks and manure pits for the convenience of exhibitors. The arena began using the barn during the Carolina Mountains Arabian Horse Show Sept. 3-4. "This show has needed additional stabling for several years, as have a number of other shows which have been at the arena since we opened in early 1991," said Williams. By increasing stabling capacity, the arena will meet the needs of existing shows and promote their further growth and be able to recruit new and larger shows, according to Williams. The Bishop family's gifts over the years have supported a seat campaign and allowed the arena to purchase equipment used in day-to-day operations. Garrison Arena hosts horse and cattle shows as well as rodeos and other livestock and agricultural shows. "The Bishop family's support has allowed us to achieve the level of success we have today," said Williams. The addition of the Bishop barn makes a total of three horse barns for the arena. END
