DATE: 5/17/01 CONTACT: Rick Willey, Clemson Extension 4-H natural resources specialist, (864) 656-3090 WRITER: Giles Singleton, (864) 656-3876 Upstate 4-H team takes shooting sports honors CLEMSON - Members of the Upstate 4-H Shooting Sports Club were honored recently for several awards in South Carolina's first Youth Hunter Education Challenge, held at the Clinton House near Clinton. "Youths from various organizations across the state competed in wildlife identification, hunter responsibility, archery, shotgun and rifle competitions for both team and individual awards," said Rick Willey, Clemson Extension 4-H natural resource specialist. Willey said that, in addition to teaching firearm and archery safety and responsibility, the 4-H Shooting Sports program strives to teach young people life skills and to make them better citizens. Members of the Upstate 4-H Shooting Sports Club competed in both the junior and senior divisions. In addition to the senior team taking second and the junior team finishing third, members of the 4-H club received several individual awards. All are from Seneca. In the senior division, Kevin Cox was high overall individual. He finished first in archery, third in shotgun, second in hunter responsibility and third in wildlife identification. Matt Henson was first in hunter responsibility and second in wildlife identification. In the junior division, Travis Cox was second in rifle, third in archery and third in hunter responsibility. Heidi Hendon was first in hunter responsibility and second in wildlife identification. Trey McAnally was third in wildlife identification.
