The 22 Clemson 4-H'ers traveled at their own expense to Memphis July 29 through Aug. 4. Many of the competing classes had more than 120 entries. "This was probably our best regional team ever," said Elizabeth Buist,Clemson Extension 4-H horse specialist from Greenwood County. "All the participants helped and supported each other. Everyone was so positive, and the show was extremely well run." To qualify, youths had to receive points at the State 4-H Horse Event. Slots were reserved within each riding division based on number of entries in the division. The 4-H'ers with the most points received the first invitations. The 4-H'ers who placed in the horse show were: · Teneka Dixon, Kershaw County, 8th in Stock Type Mares; · Rebekah Roof, Lexington County, 9th in stock Type Mares and 4th in Reining; · Winn Dadds, Marion County, 10th in Stock Type Mares and 10th in Hunt Seat Showmanship; · Crystal Roddy, Greenwood County, 5th in Stock Type Geldings; · Sarah Folsom, Darlington County, 9th in Stock Type Geldings; · Kathryn Stanley, Florence County, 9th in Quarter Horse Mares; · Justin Buist, Greenwood County, 9th in Quarter Horse Geldings; · Kenneth Young, Florence County, 9th in Saddle Type Mares (Non-Trotting); · Lydia Roof, Lexington County, 9th in Pony Working Hunter; · Sarah Atkins, Orangeburg County, 3rd in Dressage and 1st in Open Jumping. In addition to the riding competition, 4-H'ers competed in horse judging, hippology, horse bowl, public speaking, individual demonstration and team demonstration. The hippology contest consists of several different phases -- written, stations, judging and team problems. Overall results are given for both team and individual placings. The hippology team members were Alison Reed, Benjamen Reed, Emily Rhoads and Kelli Hardy. All are from Anderson County. The team placed 7th in the written phase. Alison Reed placed 7th in written phase, 8th in stations and 8th overall. Steve Goodson, Anderson County 4-H horse club volunteer leader, was coach. "We were well represented in Individual Demonstration by Rebekah and Lydia Roof. Rebekah won 10th place in tough competition," said Buist. END
