State Fair COLUMBIA -- "Celebrating Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow" is the theme for 4-H exhibits that will cover 6,000 square feet of the Ruff Building during the South Carolina State Fair Oct. 3-13. "Visitors will be able to see how 4-H has evolved over the past 100 years to continue to meet the needs of our youth," said William Hair, Clemson Extension 4-H agriculture specialist and coordinator of the exhibit. Contests in egg preparation, breads and dairy foods will be featured for 4-H members throughout South Carolina. A photography exhibit, a green tomato contest and an agricultural identification contest are also included in the activities. In addition, fairgoers will have an opportunity to see many of their favorite 4-H livestock shows. "We invite everyone to come out and see what 4-H has to offer," said Hair. "This is just a tip of the iceberg regarding the programs offered at 4-H. We're more than cows, corn and cooking." This year is the 100th anniversary of 4-H. With more than 6.8 million youths involved in 4-H, it is one of the nation's most diverse organizations. Originally focused on agricultural projects, 4-H has expanded to support the needs and interests of young people into the 21st century. The 4-H program crosses all economic, racial and social barriers to engage all youth in programs that help them succeed. Learning by doing is the central theme of 4-H education.
